Exploring Fort Vancouver with Solanah

Last week I visited Solanah and we spent the afternoon exploring Fort Vancouvera 19th-century fur trading outpost. We had a chance to see reenactments in the blacksmith shop, carpenter shop, and trading post. The smells of wood and smoke in the crisp fall air was delightful.

Every room had beautiful light and I was so happy that I brought my camera. We spent most of the afternoon taking photos of each other and all of the charming rooms. It was really fun to see both of our photos the next day. To take a peek head over to her blog, Vixen Vintage.

each moment

photographs by Ryland Bouchard

vintage dress: etsy
vintage brass grape necklace: Bohemian Bisoux Vintage
vintage shoes: 1940s deadstock

We took these photographs before we left our home on Guemes Island earlier this year. The film sat in the camera in our hot car for months before I took it to be developed. Apparently, this is a great way to make photos look totally crazy.

Ryland wrote and recorded this song while we were living on the island, and it fits perfectly with these photos and my memories of our time there. I have been missing the quiet forest and cool beach. Hopefully we will soon be settled in a peaceful home with a sizable garden.

it won't be long

photographs by Ryland Bouchard and Lisa Vironda

Most of my shoes are sitting unworn these days. Every time I lace up these beat-up 1930s boots I want to go on an adventure. They have been the perfect companions for foraging for mushrooms in the forest, combing for sea glass on the windy beach, and digging for treasures in the dusty corners of antique stores.

We are preparing to say goodbye to our dear home on Guemes Island. Many adventures are ahead of us this year and I am ready, with my favorite suitcase and boundless boots.

This photo album is one of the many gifts that Lauren from Bohemian Bisoux Vintage has mailed to me. We have been exchanging surprise gifts and it is always a delight to find a package from her in the mailbox. All of the photographs in this album are from a family vacation taken in August 1939 and I just adore all of her outfits. All of the scenes have me dreaming of a long summer trip in the car.

My dad is a truck driver and when we were kids my brother and I would take turns going for week long trips with him, hauling loads of steel to rust belt cities. Most of my childhood memories of summer are of truck stops, country music cassette tapes, studying the atlas, and steel mills.

I don't know where we will be living this summer, but I hope that there will be a few long car rides to new places. I would love to see Crater Lake and Redwood National Park. Where would you like to go this summer? What was your favorite family vacation?
